'The Cyclists', oil on canvas, by Pierre Gaillardot (circa 1960s). Mostly known for its iconic Tour de France bicycle race - the most prestigious and difficult in the world -  France is a joy both for professionals and amateurs of the sport. The artist, Gaillardot, often depicted French sports in his paintings, usually those with colourful competitions such as horse racing, sailing regattas, cycling races, etc. In this work we see two amateur cyclists watching the peloton of a serious race pass by from the side of the road. Of course the demanding races in France are very exciting and challenging but most French prefer a more leisurely ride on paths - voies vertes -  that pass near vineyards, castles, cathedrals, Roman ruins, engineering wonders, charming villages and cities bursting with history. Why not have this picture in your home or workplace to remind you of such joys? The painting is in good condition after having recently undergone a surface cleaning and preservation. It is newly framed with a French-style linen slip. Please enjoy the many photos accompanying this listing. Upon request a video of the artwork may be provided.

About the Artist: Pierre Gaillardot (1910-2002), French painter from the new school of Paris whose origins were from the Burgundy region. He depicted scenes of vineyards and winemakers as well as horse races, sailing regattas and bathers on the beach. Employing a rather expressionist style, his depictions of horsing sports perfectly capture their swift movement and very colourful riders. In recognition of his inspired art, in 1966 he was awarded the ‘Prix Pierre Puvis de Chavannes' upon the recommendation of the Committee of the ‘Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts’ and the City of Paris. A retrospective exhibition of his works was held at the ‘Musée d’Art Moderne’ in Paris in 1967. His works appear for sale at the major international auction houses and reside in collections around the world.
