Vintage French Ceramic Pitcher by Atelier Dieulefit (circa 1960s-70s)
SKU 2574
A distinctive hand-thrown stoneware pitcher from the renowned pottery centre of Dieulefit, France, the Atelier Dieulefit (circa 1960s-70s). Executed in a rich off-white glaze in a drip motif with a darker handle and rim, and decorated with a bold band of abstract red spiral motifs encircling the body — a design evocative of mid-century Provençal modernism.
Although unsigned by a specific potter, the base bears the “Atelier Dieulefit” mark, linking it to one of the celebrated cooperative studios active in the Drôme region during the post-war decades. Pieces from this circle are admired for their sculptural forms and painterly surface treatments, reflecting both traditional craft and the modernist influences of artists such as Jacques Pouchain and Élisabeth Joulia. The pottery owner, Jacques Pouchain (1925-2015) left Paris and gave up his architectural training in the 1950s for the South of France to devote himself to art and his pottery studio at Dieulefit. He produced highly personal work and more commercial pieces as well both revealing a modern approach to pottery.
