Ask a Question

Vintage French Ceramic Vase (circa 1990s). Discovered in the South of France, this is a quietly assured piece from an as-yet unidentified French studio potter. The loose, gestural brushwork is confident without being showy, and the form itself is subtly considered: a gently faceted oval body, softly pinched at intervals to interrupt the regularity of the wheel-thrown shape, tapering to a wide, open mouth. The background is a creamy white glaze, richly speckled, over which the decoration is applied in sweeping strokes of iron brown, dark grey-green, and a delicate dusty mauve. A large leaf or frond form anchors the right side of the composition; diagonal hatching strokes and loose calligraphic marks in violet complete the front face. There is real talent evident in the final form and would be a real conversation piece in your home or workplace. It is in very good overall condition. Please enjoy the many photos accompanying the listing. Upon request a video will be provided.

About the Maker's Mark: The base bears an impressed maker's mark (see photos) that resembles a knotted rope — a form with maritime and craft associations common in the studios of the French Mediterranean coast. The mark remains unidentified in our research to date; no name appears alongside it. It was acquired from a source based in Toulon, France, a major French Navy port.
