Vintage ceramic vase by Gisèle Buthod-Garçon (circa 1980s-90s). This hand-thrown raku vessel by celebrated French ceramicist Gisèle Buthod-Garçon embodies the artist’s masterful interplay of earth, fire, and form. The generously rounded body rises to a subtly flared, textured collar in deep, smoky brown, providing a striking contrast to the luminous glaze below. Shades of ochre, earth, and other delicate hues merge across the surface, enriched by the characteristic crackle and organic markings born of the raku firing process. Buthod-Garçon’s approach to American raku—where the piece is removed from the kiln while red-hot and placed in combustible materials—imparts unique tonal variations and intricate surface patterns, making each work entirely singular. The vessel’s tactile presence and elemental palette speak to the artist’s inspiration drawn from travel, nature, and the dialogue between tradition and innovation. In good overall condition. The maker's mark is camouflaged within the neck of the piece. Please see the many photos accompanying this listing. Upon request a video will be provided.

About the Artist: Gisèle Buthod-Garçon was born in 1954 in Salon-de-Provence, France. Since beginning her career in 1982, she has drawn inspiration from earth, fire, form, enamel, nature, and travel. She is a master of the American raku technique—a ceramic process distinguished from its Japanese counterpart by a post-firing reduction stage. Whereas traditional Japanese raku involves a shorter firing cycle and cooling in open air or water, American raku places the hot pottery into containers with combustible materials such as sawdust or newspaper, producing distinctive surface patterns and textures.

A pivotal moment in her development came in 1979 during a trip to Senegal, which sparked her desire to work with clay. Over the years, further travels across Africa and Asia have profoundly influenced her artistic vision, infusing her ceramics with a global sensibility and a deep appreciation for natural forms.
