'The Washerwomen', oil on board, by A. Clement, 20th Century French school. A quietly powerful figure study in the French social-realist tradition, depicting two washerwomen at their labour against a backdrop of pale town buildings and bare pollarded trees. The composition is grounded in its warm browns, olive-greys and soft ochres, lifted by delicate accents of yellow, rose and rust. The artist strips the figures of individual detail, concentrating instead on posture, weight and the rhythm of work, producing an image of real dignity and atmosphere. The bare winter trees and muted light give the scene a still, contemplative quality imparting a wonderful sense of quiet and unhurried rhythm to the picture. The effect is atmospheric and easy to live with, evoking the timeless charm of provincial France. A very appealing example of mid-century French painting on a much-loved traditional theme, and one that sits beautifully in a country interior. The painting is in good overall condition signed in the lower right hand by the artist. It is also newly framed with a linen slip. Please enjoy the many photos accompanying this listing. Upon request a video will be provided.
