'The Rugby Tackle' Original French Advertising Prototype Illustration (circa 1920s)
SKU 1206
'The Rugby Tackle', pencil, ink and gouache on paper, original advertising prototype illustration, unsigned (circa 1920s). The French aperitif, Goudron Jifran, was popular in the 1920s. Their advertising campaigns often featured sport to appeal to 'those who prefer more alcohol and less sugar'. A real man's drink apparently. This aperitif was created in 1896 by Jules Franc in Bordeaux, and was to be drunk neat or with water, or very hot as a grog. It was 'appreciated by both young and old alike' according to their advertising spiel and was especially useful to stimulate one's appetite as well as being good for one's health. That is the backdrop for this rare, absolutely delightful and almost kitsch specimen of advertising history. In fair-to-good condition commensurate with age. There are some minor blemishes and spots apparent but that do not affect the overall impression of the illustration. Please enjoy the many photos accompanying the listing. Upon request a video may be provided.
