'The Mask', Berlin School (circa 1940s - 1960s)
SKU 0478
'The Mask', oil on board, Berlin School, (circa 1940s - 1960s). Perhaps an homage to Picasso's African period when he painted in a style strongly influenced by African sculpture, particularly traditional African masks. The similarities to this work are subtle but apparent. The bold lines divide the collage of geometric shapes and the mask-like face is covered in white and suggestive of face paint. There is a panoply of both lucent colour and subtle hue. In good vintage condition commensurate with age. The artwork has been newly framed with an elegant linen slip. Unsigned. A video clip of this piece will be provided upon request.
Our gallery has access to a cache of paintings from Berlin in the 1940s - 1960s. Regrettably the work is unsigned and the artist therefore, unknown. It is impossible consequently to deduce anything about their background or aspirations. What we do know is this work remains beautifully compelling even after the considerable time since its creation.
