SKU 1338
'The Cyclists Rest Stop in Honfleur' by Jean-Marie Luc Blanpain, oil on canvas (circa 1970s). The artist's depiction of the terrace of the well known Honfleur restaurant, 'Au Relais des Cyclistes' immediately delights the viewer with its charm and vivid colour. Decades old, it originated as a rest stop for cyclists coming into town (please see accompanying historic photos with our thanks from the current restaurant's owners). There is something special about an artwork that walks the line between figuration and abstraction - this one does that with aplomb. Today the 'Relais' continues as a neighbourhood restaurant not far from the picturesque water basin. The artwork is in good overall condition and has been newly framed in a tray. Signed by the artist in the right hand corner. There is not a lot known about the artist, Blanpain, other than he was born in 1947 and paints delightful scenes from everyday life in France and landscapes. His works are very collectible and are the subject of spirited bidding at European auction houses.
