'The Casino', oil on board, by André Meurice (circa 1950s - 60s). This artist is known for his depictions of nostalgically glamorous scenes in France, mostly along the Riviera. The artwork is quintessential Meurice, depicting well-healed men and women greeting each other at the entry to the casino. The fashion wear and hairstyles of the women point us towards the past of the 1920s. It appears the artist is also making a statement in support of the liberation of women from the oppression of the era. The 1920s was a time when young women were known for their energetic freedom, embracing a lifestyle viewed by many at the time as outrageous, immoral or downright dangerous. This was perhaps the first generation of independent women who pushed the barriers in economic, political and sexual freedom. The artist's favourable treatment of the subjects clearly conveys approval of the new lifestyle. The piece is in good vintage condition with just a few minor blemishes in the paint not affecting the overall impression of the work. It is in its original characterful frame which is cracked, scratched and scuffed and therein lies its charm. Upon request a video of the piece can be provided. Signed: 'Meurice' (left hand corner).

About the Artist: André Meurice was active in the 20th century. For someone who has had dozens of paintings sold at the international auction houses, surprisingly little is known of his life. Most of his paintings, drawings and gouache works depict elegant and glamorous scenes in France from a bygone era.
