'Seated Woman With Book' (1924)
SKU 1095
'Seated Woman with Book', oil on canvas, by unknown artist (1924). A veritable feast for the eyes, the artist must have surely have been inspired by Henri Matisse to create this work. You may know Matisse painted countless stunning interiors. Using his unprecedented trademark luminous colours, the great Fauvist filled his canvases with intricate patterns on textiles, wallpapers, ceramics, floors and carpets. Although Matisse's interiors contained a distinctly Moorish influence, this artist chose a mix of patterns more traditionally French from that era. Here the solitary woman depicted in the work contemplates a passage from the book that rests on the table in front of her which resonates in her life. It has touched her so much that she can't read further. Sometimes it is these moments which fill one with regrets...or which make life worth living. Whatever the case, it is a touching, colourful portrait of a moment in time which was inspired by Matisse's paintings of women in ornamented interiors and perhaps, a real vignette from this artist's own life. The artwork is framed and is in overall fair to good vintage condition commensurate with age. Regrettably the signature is illegible. The year 1924 is clearly written. The artwork has been professionally cleaned thus adding lustre to the work for decades to come. The condition on the reverse side of the canvas attests to its characterful age.
