'Roundabout on the Champs-Élysées' by Roger Bertin (1957)

Roundabout at the Champs-Élysées, oil on canvas (1957), by Roger Bertin (1915 - 2003). Just up a bit from the Place de la Concorde not far from the Grand Palais in Paris can be found a peaceful respite from the busy Champs-Élysées and the Arc de Triomphe. This is the small garden inside the roundabout, Marcel Dassault. Strollers and purposeful-walkers make their way in between the park benches and the iconic Parisian outdoor park seats under the grand trees and hôtels-particulier of the boulevard. The rain has ended and the air refreshed. A beautiful painterly expression by an artist of note and collected internationally. In very good vintage condition. Newly framed with linen slip. About the Artist: Roger Bertin was born in Paris in 1915, and lived in the same house all his life. His godfather was the poet and painter Max Jacob, who gave him his first lessons in drawing as a child. In 1934 he entered the Academie Jean de Botton, and subsequently the Academie Frochot. In 1937 he became an Associate of the Salon d’Automne, and in 1939 he exhibited at the Gallery Delmotte, New York, and the Galerie Charpentier in Paris. He continued to exhibit extensively throughout his life in Paris, Monaco, Cannes, New York, Berlin and Munich, specialising in scenes of Paris, still lifes, interiors, and landscapes. He also painted scenes of North Africa as a result of his travels in Algeria and Morocco in the 1940s. Examples of his work can be found in the Musée d’Art Moderne, Paris, Musée de la Ville de Paris, and the Philadelphia Museum. Roger Bertin died in 2003.
