'Posing Models', oil on board, by artist with the initials STM (circa 1940s - 1960s). A depiction of two women - one in sensuous pose, the other perhaps more nervously rigid. There are no facial features painted in - just lines and colour. Painted with the warmer hues of the colour spectrum, the work is executed in harmonious beiges, browns, faded yellows and faded orange. This painting surely must have been inspired by Picasso as its style and composition attest. The artist, STM, lived in Berlin in the period after WWII. This fact probably accounts for the artist initialing their works rather than using their full name. We have to remember that under Soviet-controlled East Berlin after the war, this type of art was considered a radical departure from the 'authorised' socialist realism. Notwithstanding this, several galleries have acquired and are now selling STM's works. This speaks to the widespread assessment of the quality and interest of the art. In good vintage condition commensurate with age. It is in a new frame with linen slip. Initialed: 'STM' in lower right hand corner. A short video clip of the piece may be provided upon request.
