'Portrait of a Man Reading', oil on canvas, 20th Century French School. The subject reads his book quietly, yet, like a companion in the living room, his soothing presence is felt wonderfully expressed by the artist in this painting. Discovered in Paris, the quality of the work is undeniable. The colours chosen by the artist also transmit a sense of quietude. This artwork certainly has sufficient presence be the centrepiece of a room or simply a charming addition to a wall filled with portraits. It is regrettable the piece is unsigned. We've never understood why accomplished artists don't publicly acknowledge their work with a signature and date. The painting is in good overall condition. The gallery has retained the original characterful frame with white slip, minor nicks, scuffs, marks and all. It simply adds to the vintage charm of the painting, enticing the viewer at the same time to snuggle up in a comfy chair, stop scrolling and savour the pleasures of a real book.
