Mid-Century Italian Wall Mirror with Beaded Brass Frame and Hammered Decoration (circa 1950s)
SKU 2587
Mid-Century Italian wall mirror with brass frame and beading with hammered cartouche decoration (circa 1950s). The shield-form brass wall mirror was among the most widely produced and exported objects of the Italian decorative arts boom that followed reconstruction in the early 1950s. Closely associated with the broader aesthetic of Italian mid-century design — clean silhouette, warm metalwork, architectural restraint — examples have been attributed to Gio Ponti and other named designers, though the majority were produced by anonymous workshops supplying the domestic and export markets. The level of metalwork detailing here — hand-hammered surface, clean piercing, separately applied cartouche — is consistent with the better Italian brass workshops of the period, several of which were based in Brescia and the Bergamo area, known for high-quality decorative brass work. It is above the standard of mass workshop production, and the pierced cartouche in particular suggests a more considered, possibly bespoke commission or the upper end of the workshop spectrum. The mirror is in overall fair condition with a faded, aged patina particularly on the brass frame and decorative top. The backing is of wood, covered in a protective paper.
