Ask a Question

An elegant cylindrical ceramic vase dating to the 1960s by Michel Barbier. The form is refined, with a narrow lip and a glossy, lustrous enamel glaze that envelops both body and rim. The central motif is a stylised figure—possibly a shepherd—rendered with Barbier’s characteristic charm and minimalism. On the reverse, a single cypress tree in a darker, richer blue offers a striking contrast to the softer tones of the main body. In good overall condition, this piece bears Barbier’s stylised bird maker’s mark on the underside—executed here in an unusually abstract form, adding to its uniqueness and collectability. Please enjoy the many photos accompanying the listing. Upon request a video will be provided.

About the Artist: Michel Barbier (1933-2012), was a ceramic decorator in Vallauris, France, for Gustave Reynaud's Le Mûrier, along with Jean Derval, Reynaud's brother-in-law, who designed production models. Barbier's pieces sported stylised birds and foliage which were the most common themes both for utilitarian and for exhibition pieces in which abstract motifs were also employed.
