'Flower Arrangement in Vase' by Lilian E. Whitteker (1968)
'Flower Arrangement in Vase', oil on canvas (1968), by Lilian Whitteker (1881 - 1979). This bouquet includes a variety of flowers in red, pink, yellow and orange with green foliage creating a splendid mosaic of colour. Some flowers were created using an impasto technique thereby adding another dimension to the work. The background is subtle with light touches deliberately exposing the texture of the canvas. The work, signed and dated in 1968 is in good vintage condition commensurate with its age. In original frame with linen slip. Upon request, a video clip of this work can be provided for additional context.
About the Artist: Lilian E. Whitteker began her art career in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA. She was a member of the Cincinnati Women's Art Club. She spent most of her time painting landscapes, still-lifes, and flowers then moved to France in the mid-1920's where she remained the rest of her life. Following the death of her partner in 1965, Whitteker moved to a castle - the Chateau de la Bourdaisiere, built in the 1500s in the Loire Valley. Here she died in 1979. A street in Tours, France, "Allee Lilian Whitteker", was named after her and is documented here.
