'Cubist Still Life', oil on board, by J.G. (circa 1940s - 1960s). Bottles, a bowl of fruit, a wine glass, a lemon and a newspaper (Le Journal) are arranged on a visual slant with a backdrop of geometric shards defined by strong black lines and filled with colour. In one of J.G.'s many tribute artworks to the cubists, Gris, Picasso and Braque, this vibrant depiction of everyday objects is clearly an homage yet an entirely original piece at the same time. There is harmony and balance in all of that cubist chaos and seductive colour to draw you in as the viewer. A fairly sizeable work that will enrich any room in which it is placed. In good vintage condition showing minor fading and blemishing commensurate with age. Initialed: 'J.G.' in lower lefthand corner. Upon request a video of the artwork will be provided.
Unfortunately details of J.G.'s life remain undiscovered other than they lived in Berlin in the period after WWII. Notwithstanding the anonymity of the artwork, several galleries have acquired and are now selling J.G.'s pieces which speaks to the widespread assessment of the quality and interest of the art.
