'Bois Fleuri' (Wooded Forest), oil on canvas, by Geneviève Gavrel, circa 1960s-70s. A dappled woodland scene depicts a stand of slender trees rising through dense summer foliage, their trunks catching patches of light in warm ochre and rust against the deep, layered greens of the surrounding canopy. At ground level, a drift of white blossom or wildflowers brightens the forest floor, adding a soft, luminous focal point to the composition. The artist's loose, textured brushwork and confident handling of colour capture the flickering, sun-dappled quality of light moving through trees. A fine example of her approach to landscapes, it was painted with the same freshness and immediacy found in her scenes of France, Tunisia, and Spain. The painting is in good overall condition and is in its original frame with a reconditioned slip. After 1966, she signed her artworks simply with 'Gavrel', having eliminated her first initial. About the Artist: Geneviève Gavrel (1909–1999) was a painter of landscapes, portraits, interiors, and still lifes, working across France, Tunisia, and Spain over a long career. She trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Tunis, where she lived until Tunisian independence, after which she settled in Saint-Maur-des-Fossés, France, in 1957. Gavrel was a member of several notable French artistic societies, including the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, the Salon d'Automne, Peintres Témoins de Leur Temps, the Salon des Indépendants, and the Salon des Terres Latines, and her work is associated with the École de Paris, the loosely-knit community of artists, many foreign-born, working in Paris through the early-to-mid 20th century, unified more by shared time and place than by a single style.
