Antique Spanish Medical Cabinet by Clausolles Sociedad Anónima Barcelona (circa 1920s)
SKU 1899
Antique medical cabinet by Clausolles Sociedad Anónima, Barcelona, Spain (circa 1920s). There are many vintage and antique medical cabinets on the market but none as stunningly beautiful, stylish and original as this one. Discovered in the South of France but acquired from a Spanish seller, the piece has polished metallic French legs, sometimes called cabriole legs. They feature a knee curving outward and an ankle curving inward, ending in a decorative foot. The same metal is used on the door closure fitting and the finial ornament with the company name. There are four interior horizontal shelves in glass. The structure itself is a sturdy metal painted white with glass panes for internal visibility. There are small hooks above the top internal shelf. A practical storage cabinet has never been so stylish as this one. It is in overall fair condition with the presence of a crack in one of the glass panes on the side (see photos). There is an aged patina throughout. Since the company went public (Sociedad Anónima) in 1916, this piece was most likely manufactured in the 1920s, as the company name appears on the piece with the 'S.A.' appendage. Please enjoy the many photos attached to the listing. Upon request a video will be provided.

About the Maker: Casa Clausolles was founded in 1830 by Pau Clausolles. He belonged to a family that had been dedicated to manufacturing medical instruments, particularly engaged in the manufacture of surgical and orthopaedic instruments and prostheses. In the Clausolles workshop, the first ether inhaler device used for anaesthesia was manufactured by order of Dr. Antonio Mendoza (University of Barcelona) who applied it in the amputation of a forearm of a young girl. The Clausolles company, wanting to expand the firm, bought the surgical material factory of another company called Valls, Teixidor, Jordana y Cia, which in 1909 had built a factory in Barcelona. Clausolles turned this factory into its main manufacturing centre for its products and opened various stores in Barcelona, Valencia, Madrid, Bilbao and Seville. On January 20, 1916, the company, Clausolles S.A. (Sociedad Anónima), went public with the intention of increasing its capital - 5,000 shares were issued with a value of 500 pesetas per share.
