'View of Montmartre', oil on board (1955) by Jean Jaffeux (1931 - 2015). A charming view from the iconic old quarry street of Rue Lepic, one of Montmartre’s most famous streets. It takes its name from General Louis Lepic (1765-1827) who earned Napoleon’s gratitude at the Battle of Eylau in 1807. Many well known people have resided on the street including painters Van Gogh and Willette. Rue Lepic gives access to Montmartre’s two surviving windmills commonly named ‘Moulin de la Galette’. At the bottom of the rue Lepic stands another windmill, the famous Moulin-Rouge. Painting framed and in good vintage condition. Signed: 'J Jaffeux' in lower right hand corner and written 'Rue Lepic 55' in lower left hand corner.

About the Artist: Jean Jaffeux, (1931 - 2015) was 15 when he painted his first canvas. Jean, self-taught, was motivated and inspired by the work of his father, Charles, who was a painter, illustrator and engraver. After having worked in the field of commercial drawing and illustration, Jean changed artistic direction, a decision which lasted a lifetime. He started working with enamel on volcanic earth after having received a proposal from the director of the enamel works, Atelier de Saint Martin, in Mozac, France. This was the start of a 50 year career where he became renown for his decorative table tops and inspired works on cathedral and church altars and stations-of-the-cross. This work was painted when Jaffeux was still a young man of 24. At retirement age, Jaffeux picked up where he left off years earlier, painting again both figurative and abstract works in oils. In 2013 he said, "I hope I die with a paint brush in my hand."
