'Portrait of Woman in the Mirror', oil on board, by STM (circa 1940s - 1960s). When we gaze in the mirror, we like to see ourselves from all angles. This beautifully intricate cubist work comes alive with its earth-tone hues and harmonious composition and presents the viewer a brief peek into this intimate moment. From the 'School of Berlin', the artist with initials 'STM' was most certainly inspired by Picasso and the cubists from the pre and post-war eras. There is a maturity and finesse in execution making this extremely attractive and very collectible. Living in Soviet-controlled East Berlin after the war, this type of art was considered a radical departure from the 'authorised' socialist realism. This probably accounts for the artist initialing their works rather than using their full name. This notwithstanding, it speaks to the widespread assessment of the quality and interest of the art. Several galleries have acquired and are now selling STM's works.

This piece is in good vintage condition in a new frame with gold-coloured slip. Initialed: 'STM' in lower left hand corner. Upon request, a short video clip of the artwork may be provided.
