'Nudes in Repose', oil on board (circa 1940s - 1960s) by artist, STM. Two nude figures pose in front of a cubist spiralling swirl of colour. This is a portrait of two young women - both in casual and comfortable repose. The energy of the colour behind them belies their soothing composure. Life swirls on around us no matter. STM typically paints with the warmer hues of the colour spectrum however, in this work, the added blues and whites lift the image imparting life and vibrancy. This painting surely must have been inspired by Picasso as its style and composition attest. The artist, STM, lived in Berlin in the period after WWII. This fact probably accounts for the artist initialing their works rather than using their full name. We have to remember that under Soviet-controlled East Berlin after the war, this type of art was considered a radical departure from the 'authorised' Soviet realism. Noting this, several galleries have acquired and are now selling STM'S works - this speaks to the widespread assessment of the quality and interest of the art. This piece is in very good vintage condition in new frame with linen slip. Initialed: 'STM' in lower left hand corner. A short video clip of the piece may be provided upon request.
