'The Terrace' by Jean-Jules Dufour (1959)
SKU 0577
'The Terrace', oil on board, by Jean-Jules Dufour (1959). In 1959 the artist was staying with a friend on the French Riviera in the heights of the medieval village of Cagnes-sur-Mer (see preserved letter on rear of artwork). The artist captures an impression of the verdant heights with the more stony mountains of the 'Alpes Maritimes' forming the backdrop. In the foreground, a beautiful vase on a table competes with the scenery for the viewer's gaze. The painting is in good vintage condition commensurate with age. Newly framed with rear reveal. Signed in ink in lower right hand corner: 'Jean-Jules Dufour'. Upon request a video of the artwork will be provided.

April 8, 1959 - I received a letter from Claire announcing that she has just sold her house in Cagnes - this house, this terrace from which I painted this study - to Suzy Solidor*, who opened a cabaret there! For Claire, it was a liquidation of assets."
(*Early in 1930, Solidor became a popular French singer and opened a chic nightclub called La Vie Parisienne. She was openly lesbian. Solidor was famous for being the most painted woman including by Picasso, Dufy and others).
