'The Lantern', French School (1967)
SKU 0661
'The Lantern', French School, oil on canvas, (1967). Atmospheric and curious, with all that is depicted in the painting the viewer's eyes are drawn to the lantern being held by the central figure. Its light is illuminating the path towards the riverside campsite under the trees. Wheeled carriages provide shelter for the itinerants, ready to move on short notice. The artist has captured a scene from a bygone era, the portrayal of light at dusk is masterful. Regrettably, the signature on the painting is illegible and the name on the backing is uncertain. The work was acquired in the S. of France. An aged framer's label on the original frame featured an address in Marseille. Undoubtedly it is a piece of considerable quality and consummate artistry. In good vintage condition commensurate with age. Newly framed with linen slip. Dated 1967. Upon request, a short video clip of the painting can be provided.
