'Street View of Naples, Italy' oil on board, by Claude Petitet (circa 1950s). Naples is a major national and international tourist destination, being one of Italy and Europe's top tourist cities. Blessed with breathtaking geography, the view of the Bay of Naples and Mount Vesuvio have been stunning visitors for centuries, including Roman emperors. Naples is famous for its Baroque architecture, its numerous museums and artistic heritage and of course, for its food as the home of the pizza. One of the most photographed features of the city however, are its alley-like streets with cobblestones and hanging laundry such as the one in this artist's charming depiction. In the warmer months residents may even be found dining in the streets particularly to celebrate the feast days of their patron saint, San Gennaro. The body of Saint Gennaro is preserved in Naples. The Neapolitans pray to him for protection from fires, earthquakes, plagues, droughts and the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius. In every emergency, Saint Gennaro is their powerful champion and universal helper. Some may pray to him for ownership of this painting. In good overall condition, the artwork has undergone a cleaning by an art restoration professional. It is newly framed with a French style linen slip. Upon request a video may be provided.

About the Artist: Claude Petitet (1922-1996) entered the School of Fine Arts in Paris in the studio of Nicolas Untersteller (1900-1967). He was awarded the Second Grand Prize of the Prix de Rome competition in 1948 with: Trois Femmes à la Fontaine. Petitet regularly exhibited in the famous Parisian Salons and after WWII, he was an honours scholar in the 21st graduating class of the Case de Velázquez in Madrid where he was recognised for his portraits of Spanish women.
