'Still Life with Guitar', oil on board, by Lacoste (circa 1950s - 1970s). Geometric shapes and lines delineate a classical guitar in vibrant colours in this post-war artwork. Inspiration surely came from Georges Braque's early work. Braque and Picasso aimed to develop a new way of seeing which reflected the modern age. Like Braque, this artist also incorporated collage to add interest and perspective to the work. From the 'Berlin School', this piece brings together elements of cubism, constructivism and expressionism. Lines both parallel and perpendicular repeat and suggest the strings of the guitar and musical notes. All elements considered, this is a wonderful and uplifting homage to 20th Century masters, superbly executed. The artwork has been newly framed with a linen slip. In fair vintage condition commensurate with age. Signed: 'Lacoste' in the lower right hand corner. Regrettably nothing is known of the artist who signed the work. The piece was discovered in Italy via a contact in Berlin, Germany. The artist however has a French surname and newspaper used in a collage segment is in French. Please carefully view the many accompanying photos to best assess the condition and style of the artwork. Upon request, a short video clip of the artwork may be provided.
