'Seated Woman' (c. 1930s), oil on canvas, by artist M. Debuchy. This is an interesting composition - it depicts a young woman in a revealing low cut silk gown, at ease comfortably nestled in a large arm chair. Before her, arranged on an artist's easel, is a small framed painting and another on a stand nearby. To her left, a nude sculpture sits on a three-legged stool. The viewer is invited to speculate whether the subject of the painting is sitting for the artist, or whether she is the artist herself. Is that her in portrait sitting amongst her own works? Since little is known about M. Debuchy, we will never know. What we do know is that this is a beautiful piece, a perfect reflection of the era from which it comes, skilfully portrayed. Muted blues, reds and sun-drenched whites help create the scene. The subject's hair, her clothing, the arm chair upon which she is seated and the easel, all clearly from the 1930s. The work is in excellent vintage condition in its original frame signed 'M. Debuchy' in the lower right hand corner.
