'Seaside Terrace', oil on canvas, by Jean-Jacques René (circa 1980s). A melancholy woman is seated on a terrace, the sea over her back with a dinghy and its single sailor passing behind. Her glass of wine half drunk, her mind might be wandering to thoughts of her own mariner who has yet to return from the sea...or dread that they're coming back. Sometimes it is difficult moments like these which fill one with regrets, or make life worth living. Whatever the case, it is a touching, colourful portrait of a moment in time. The painting is in good overall condition having been cleaned and the canvas re-lined by an art restoration professional. The painting was then inserted in its original, characterful wooden frame which shows signs of age with some nicks, scratches and blemishes - those are what make it interesting. It is signed by the artist in the lower right hand. Please enjoy the many photos accompanying the listing. Upon request a video will be provided.

About the Artist: Jean-Jacques René was born in 1943 and arrived in beautiful Rouen just after the war. It's an understatement to say he knows the Normandy coast and Rouen, the town of 100 bell towers. He frequented museums from an early age and very quickly took a brush to his hand. Since then, he has not stopped setting his easel everywhere he can observe the world from the end of his brush. He views each of his paintings as a very personal and intuitive experience. His favourite subjects range from classic landscape painting, to portraits of children or to people with whom he has found an irresistible pull. The artist expresses himself through watercolour which he finds is an “irreversible and capricious technique, full of freshness and spontaneity”. The renderings are bright and nuanced, and undeniably modern. The artist also creates oil paintings which offer a contemporary vision of the Normandy coast, its beaches, but also the banks of the Seine and the port of Rouen. These are original and very personal creations ideal for art collectors and those who simply love an image with a beautiful story.
