'Road to Eygalières', oil and pastel on carton, by Henri-André Martin (circa 1980s). Sitting only a few minutes' drive outside the vibrant town of Saint Rémy, Eygalières holds a special spot on the list of must-see villages when visiting Provence. It has a distinct blend of what can only be described as understated elegance — sophisticated yet simple, chic without the flash. Eygalières is also a popular destination among cycling enthusiasts, with many of its routes taking riders along small, picturesque paths through magnificent limestone landscapes awash with olive groves and vineyards just like the one in Martin's depiction. The subdued hues in the painting reflect the heat of a Provencal summer, its parched grass and the quiet limestone roads that leads to the town and further on, the Alpilles range. His technique is original with raised portions of the blurred paint having the effect visually of rising heat, or heat haze, such as that which causes a mirage. The artist signed the work in the lower left hand and it has been newly framed with anti-reflective glass. About the Artist: Henri-André Martin (1918-2004) was born in Lyon to a family of doctors. Although painting was his passion from an early age, he yielded to the persuasion of his family to choose a career in medicine. In fact, he was able to divide his time between art and medicine. He combined an illustrious medical career as a renown professor of ENT with students in both France and abroad - with a very successful career as an artist whose works feature in public and private collections around the world. His pictorial work is very rich to include paintings, serigraphs and lithographs. He was a laureate of the Maurice Utrillo Prize in 1964, and a medal of honour winner selected by the Lyon Society of Fine Arts. He participated in numerous exhibitions in France and in galleries overseas in New York, Frankfurt and Geneva. His artworks appear in several museums including, for instance, in the City of Lyon and the Rodez Museum. He is remembered as a brilliant surgeon, an esteemed master of handling both the scalpel and brush with the same elegance. (Ref: Guy Lacher, Bordeaux).
