'Refraction' by STM (circa 1940s - 1960s)
0131
'Refraction', oil on board (circa 1940s - 1960s), by artist with the initials, STM. There are so many well known paintings of seated or reclining women by artists with world renown. This artwork by STM has a wonderful originality but is most certainly inspired by Pablo Picasso's series of cubist paintings of women he loved. Like Picasso, STM abandons all known form and representation of traditional art, in this case presenting the female body using geometric forms. The earth tones and muted hues render this artwork harmonious and the composition of the whole, is balanced and true. In good vintage condition commensurate with age. Newly framed with linen slip. Signed: 'STM' in lower left hand corner. Upon request a short video clip of this work may be provided.
STM was indeed inspired by the works of well known artists. He / she lived in Berlin in the period after WWII. This explains the use of initials rather than a full signature as this form of work was considered unorthodox and not authorised under the tenets of socialist realism. Several galleries have acquired and are now selling STM's works - this speaks to the widespread assessment of the quality and interest of the art.
