'Posing Nudes', oil on board, by artist with the initials STM (c. 1940s). A delightful cubist depiction, this is a portrait of two young women - one in sensuous pose, the other arranging her hair. There are no facial features painted in - just lines and colour. Painted with the warmer hues of the colour spectrum, the work is executed in harmonious browns, yellows, faded orange and grey-green. This painting surely must have been inspired by Pablo Picasso's cubist period and most possibly is an homage to his 'les Demoiselles d'Avignon', groundbreaking painting from 1907. Like that work, the women depicted here are portrayed in angles, curves and jagged shards defined by the subtle colours between the lines. The artist, STM, lived in Berlin in the period after WWII. Several galleries have acquired and are now selling STM'S works - this speaks to the widespread assessment of the quality and interest of the art. This piece is in very good vintage condition in new frame with linen slip. Initialed: 'STM' in lower left hand corner. A short video clip of the piece can be provided upon request.
