'Portrait of Woman with Meandering Hair' (circa 1940s - 1960s)
SKU 0465
'Portrait of Woman with Meandering Hair', oil on board, artist unknown (circa 1940s - 1960s). Is this a modern version of da Vinci's Mona Lisa? The similarities are certainly apparent - the outline of wavy hair, the golden hints of the brighter backdrop, the is-she or isn't-she look and the allusion to La Gioconda's red curls which drape her neck and shoulders. But mostly, it is the angle of the face with which the figure gazes at the viewer which suggests the painting of Mona Lisa. Like da Vinci's original, this is small in size (H 27 cm / 10.6" by W 28 cm / 11.0" with frame) and painted in oils on board. Interestingly, the artist painted part of the image over newspaper whose letters are still visible under the face. In good vintage condition commensurate with age. The artwork has been newly framed with a linen slip. Unsigned. A video clip of this piece will be provided upon request.
Our gallery has access to a cache of paintings from Berlin in the 1940s - 1960s. Regrettably the work is unsigned and the artist therefore, unknown. It is impossible consequently to deduce anything about their background or aspirations. What we do know is this work remains beautifully compelling even after so many years from its creation.
