'Portrait of Reclining Woman', oil on board, by artist with the initials, STM (circa 1940s - 1960s). A splendid cubist depiction, this is a portrait of a buxom young woman in muted hues. There are just lines and harmonious colours. Painted primarily in earthy shades of brown and red with coral, amber, orange and beige all of which playfully communicate between the angles and lines. Surely inspired by Pablo Picasso, the artist, STM, lived in Berlin in the period after WWII. This fact probably accounts for the artist initialing their works rather than using their full name. We have to remember that under Soviet-controlled East Berlin after the war, this type of art was considered a radical departure from the 'authorised' socialist realism. Noting this, several galleries have acquired and are now selling STM's works - this speaks to the widespread assessment of the quality and interest of the art. This piece is in good vintage condition in new frame with linen slip. Initialed: 'STM' in lower left hand corner. A short video clip may be provided upon request.
