'Port of Sète', French School (1953)
SKU 1967
'Port of Sète', oil on board, French School (1953). A charming view of the sleepy 1950s port of Sète on the French Mediterranean painted by the artist in vibrant colours in an Impressionist style. Best known for its network of canals, Sète lies between Montpellier and Béziers in the South of France on the opposite side of the Rhone River from Provence. A trio of dinghies bob up and down tied to the dock under the beaming sun. Sharing the quality of light found in Provence, it is one of the region's most distinctive features, and it has played a significant role in shaping the cultural and artistic identity of the area. The artist has masterfully captured the luminosity in this artwork as it accentuates the landscapes and seascapes of the region. As in Provence, the sunlight brings out the full spectrum of colours, making everything from the lavender fields to the red roofs of the villages and blue waters of the Mediterranean seem to glow. The view of the harbour in this piece makes the most of this luminescence. Please enjoy the many photos accompanying the listing. It is in good overall condition and is newly framed with a French-style linen slip. Upon request a video will be provided. The painting is unsigned. A sticker on the reverse of the painting dates the work to 1953. It is currently covered up by the backing.
