'Place de la Concorde Paris' by Ferdinand Jean Luigini (circa 1900 - 1915)

'Place de la Concorde Paris', oil on board, (circa 1900 - 1915) by Ferdinand Jean Luigini. This is a delightful rendering of the most well known and largest public square in Paris. In the period depicted in this artwork, Concorde moved at a much gentler pace place than the traffic-choked modern version. La Place de la Concorde connects the Tuileries Gardens and the Champs-Élysées. It has a very storied past of course as it was the site of many notable public executions by guillotine during the French Revolution, including that of Marie Antoinette, Madame du Barry, Maximilien Robespierre and Louis de Saint-Just, among others. Take heart however, in this very pleasant and peaceful painting beautifully 'executed' by Luigini. Strollers walk under lush shade-filled trees and horse carriages trot nearby (or is that an early automobile?) in a much less tumultuous time. The painting is in good vintage condition commensurate with age. The original frame however, has been retained in fair condition with all its characterful defects such as cracks, scratches and blemishes. Signed in left hand corner: 'Luigini'. About the Artist: Ferdinand Jean Luigini (1870 - 1943), studied art in Paris under Emile Verhaeren. He exhibited his landscapes and impressive architectural renderings in Paris in 1892 with the Salon des Artistes Français. Within a few short years afterwards, his art was regularly exhibited in London, Brussels, Amsterdam and New York. The Luigini name has a firm grasp on French artistic life. Ferdinand's father, Alexandre Luigini (1850 - 1906), was a leading composer of ballets and operas. His sister was a concert harpist and his nephew, Jean Tardieu (1903 - 1995) became a major poet. Ferdinand was equally famous for his large colour aquatints and for his watercolours. His etchings "show the broad sweep of the painter's brush bent upon rendering the atmosphere of large spaces...". Today Luigini's paintings and etchings are collected internationally and frequently appear at the major auction houses.
