'Naples Street Scene' (1947-48)
SKU 1059
'Naples Street Scene', oil on board, by unknown artist (1947-48). A city of glorious but tattered beauty, known for its vibrancy and, yes, a frisson of menace, Naples is a Mediterranean jewel still watched over by the still-kicking Vesuvius volcano. Its residents are fiercely proud of their city, just as passionate as New Yorkers are of theirs. The artist of this piece depicts a colourful 1940s vintage view of a street market with shoppers and sellers navigating the piazza under the bright Neapolitan sky. Most recently, popular novels and a new TV series have roused curiosity about a destination long considered little more than a stepping stone to Capri, Ischia and Amalfi. But this more modest view of the town and its residents brings warmth to the heart and incites a curiosity and longing to travel there.
The painting is in good vintage condition commensurate with age. It is newly framed with a linen slip. Signed in the lower right hand corner, the artist's name is regrettably illegible. Feel free to view the many photos accompanying the listing. Upon request a video of the artwork may be provided.
