'Monte Carlo Clay Court Tennis Tournament', oil on paper, (c. 1960s) by Claud Ambaud (1912 - 1973). A rare and very charming depiction of the clay courts of the Monte Carlo Country Club tournament from the early 1960s. The first Monte Carlo tennis tournament took place in 1897. Its successor, the Monte Carlo Open, commenced in 1969. In this naive style artwork, the tennis audience surveys three matches of doubles simultaneously. The umpires and line judges oversee the play of the racquet-wielding competitors. The location is spectacular with the courts adjacent to the azure Mediterranean. Sun, clay courts, the blue Mediterranean - who needs Wimbledon? In original frame with new mount and glass. Signed: 'Ambaud' in lower right hand corner. What a perfect gift for the tennis fanatic in your family. Game, Set and Match!

About the Artist: Claud Ambaud (1912 - 1973) was born in Brittany in the west of France. He moved to Nice in 1960 and is best known for his celebrated portrait of 'La Prefecture de Nice' painted in 1963. Although that work had more precision, the similarities in style are unmistakable.
