'La Ponche St. Tropez' by André Meurice (1964)
SKU 0723C
'La Ponche St. Tropez', gouache on paper, by André Meurice (1964). The artist, André Meurice, is known for his depictions of entrancing scenes in France, including this lively and lighthearted tableau of fashionable ladies under their parasols in the Old Town of Saint-Tropez, known as "La Ponche". La Ponche borders the Vieux Port harbour basin and is below the citadel. It is the historic centre of the fishing village and is the most picturesque area of Saint Tropez.
The name Saint-Tropez evokes images of sunbathing celebrities, designer boutiques, and luxury yachts. It's hard to believe this glamorous town was once just a humble fishing village. The appeal of Saint-Tropez was first discovered in the late 19th century by the Impressionist painter Paul Signac, who later lured artists such as Matisse and Marquet here. Then in 1955, the film, Et Dieu Créa la Femme (And God Created Woman), starring Brigitte Bardot, forever changed this small port town into a legendary seaside resort, sparkling amid the glitz of the Côte d'Azur (Ref: Lisa Alexander). In good vintage condition, newly framed and glazed. Upon request a video of the piece will be provided. Signed: 'A. Meurice 64' (left hand corner) and 'S.T.' (right hand corner S.T. = St. Tropez).
About the Artist: André Meurice was active in the 20th century. For someone who has had dozens of paintings sold at the international auction houses, surprisingly little is known of his life. Most of his drawings and gouache works depict elegant and glamorous scenes in France from a bygone era.
