'Jerusalem' by Yitzhak Frenkel-Frenel (c. 1960s)

'Jerusalem', (c. 1960s) oil on canvas, by Yitzhak Frenkel-Frenel (1899 - 1981). Frenel frequently painted the ancient synagogues, narrow lanes, surrounding countryside and local inhabitants where he lived. In this work the viewer glimpses the Dome of the Rock on the Temple Mount in old Jerusalem. The artist captures the essence of the ancient city and monument, so important to Jewish and Islamic civilisations. A turquoise sky guards over the city. Olive trees appear in the foreground of the ancient holy site while life goes on in the hillside homes and frail buildings as it has for millennia. In excellent vintage condition. In original frame and signed, 'Frenel' in the lower right hand corner. On rear: 'avec ma gratitude au Fondation Rothschild pour son aide a mes enfants.' Also on rear: 'Frenel (10-3-65 - 6-6-72)'. Translated: 'with my gratitude to the Rothschild Foundation for its help to my children.'

About the Artist: Yitzhak Alexander Frenel Frenkel (1899 - 1981) is well known and collected internationally. He was born in Odessa, Ukraine and is considered as one of the important Jewish painters of the 'Ecole de Paris' along with Soutine and Modigliani. He perfected his studies in Paris in the beginning of the 1920s at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and at the Grande Chaumière where he studied sculpture at the studios of the painter Matisse and the sculptor Bourdelle. Frenel returned to Palestine in 1925 and opened the Histadrut Art School in Tel Aviv. In 1934, he settled in Safed. In 1973, his house reopened as a museum showcasing his work and in July 1978, Frenel was the subject of a one-man show at the Orangerie in Paris.
