'Intimate Portrait of Cubist Woman', oil on board, by unknown artist, School of Berlin (circa 1950s-70s). A sensuous and vibrantly colourful painting depicting a glamorous cubist figure reminiscent of a 1960s movie star. Perhaps the artist was inspired by Liz Taylor who was captured on film by paparazzi in Taormina, Sicily or Brigitte Bardot while on the beach in St. Tropez. Or, perhaps she is a close-up of one of Picasso's faceted women from his classic work of cubism, 'les Demoiselles d'Avignon' (1907). Cubism created a new dimension to painting which had turned away from the realistic modelling of figures. Instead, it portrayed objects from various angles all at once. This artist uses the lively colours and bold lines to create the geometric planes of cubism to wonderful effect.The work is in good vintage condition and has been newly framed with linen slip to complement the piece. It is unsigned. The exact background of the artist is unknown. This gallery's source indicates the piece was acquired in Berlin, Germany.
