'Floral Bouquet in Painted Vase' by Lilian E. Whitteker (1968)
'Floral Bouquet in Painted Vase', oil on canvas (1968), by Lilian Whitteker (1895 - 1978). This work of expressionist art may be one of Lilian Whitteker's finest floral pieces. A beautiful bouquet of voluptuous blossoms and wild flowers explode in colour. The combination of the individual colours - yellow, red, orange, blue and green - together, create a visually cohesive whole and act as a counterpoint to the more subtly painted vase. The background delicately provides the perfect setting for such a wonderful projection of colour. Some light but characterful craquelure appears. The work, signed and dated in 1968 is in very good vintage condition commensurate with its age. In its original frame with linen slip.

Following the death of her partner in 1965, Whitteker moved to a castle - the Chateau de la Bourdaisiere, built in the 1500s in the Loire Valley. Here she died in 1978. A street in Tours, France, "Allee Lilian Whitteker", was named after her.
