'Figure in Blue Light', French School (circa 1960s)
SKU 2474
A striking and enigmatic mid-century nude, Figure in Blue Light offers a highly expressive, almost surreal vision of the female form. Executed in a limited palette of steely blues, cool greys and warm flesh tones, the figure appears both sculptural and spectral — emerging from a deeply textured background marked by linear incisions, gestural scrawls, and layered pigment. The artist, though anonymous, demonstrates confidence in their strokes and a clear command of abstraction. The deliberate lines and coloured marks throughout the surface are part of the artist’s unique approach — suggestive of movement, tension, or perhaps even, inner life.
Discovered in the South of France, the work likely dates to the 1960s and bears aesthetic affinities with post-war European modernism, particularly in its bold distortion of form and evocative surface treatment. A collection-worthy piece of psychological depth and decorative power. The artwork is in fair-to-good overall condition having recently been treated by an art restoration specialist. The canvas was stabilised and a cleaning undertaken. A simple tray frame supports the canvas, allowing the painting to take centre stage. Please enjoy the many photos accompanying the listing.
