'Faces' by Mino Maccari (circa 1970s)

'Faces', oil on canvas, by Mino Maccari (circa 1970s). Without a narrative from the artist regarding this artwork, I'm tempted to speculate his inspiration may have been David Bowie's Ziggy look with that trademarked, heavy-handed Kabuki-style makeup. One wonders whether this depiction is of the same person and their alter ego, or of two persons with very different styles. Whatever the case, the artwork grabs the viewer's attention with its vibrant colours and original appeal. The piece is in its original frame but with a new wide-bordered linen mount and new, anti-reflective glass. It is in good overall condition and signed by the artist in the lower centre of the piece. About the Artist: Mino Maccari (1898-1989), was an Italian artist and journalist. His work was part of the painting event submitted by Italy in the art competition at the 1948 London Summer Olympics (art of course no longer figures in any Olympic events as they did in this era). The artworks submitted for these Olympics were displayed in seven galleries at the Victoria & Albert Museum in South Kensington. Maccari was also the founder of an Italian language political and arts magazine that existed between 1924 and 1943. He has an international following of his works which go on sale at the major European auction houses.
