'Divine Grace' by J.G. (circa 1940s - 1960s)

'Divine Grace', oil on board, by J.G. (circa 1940s - 1960s). A term present in many religions, divine grace has been defined as the divine influence which operates in humans to regenerate and to inspire virtuous impulses as well as to impart strength to endure trial and resist temptation. As humans we are pulled in many directions and the choices we are presented with are closely linked to the concept of free will. This cubist work of art by JG depicts a beautiful human seemingly struggling with her life's choices - her divinity apparent throughout. The flat planes of colour and complex puzzle-like compositions echo the arrangements of cutout paper with which the style originated, and here, act as a metaphor for the pushes and tugs one experiences during the course of an earthly life. The piece is in good vintage condition commensurate with age showing some very minor blemishing on the painted surface which do not affect the overall impression of the art. Initialed 'J.G.' in the lower lefthand corner. It is newly framed with a linen slip. Upon request, a short video of the work may be provided. 

About the Artist: Our gallery has access to a cache of paintings from Berlin in the 1940s - 1960s. What we know of J.G. is derived from our source from whom we've obtained this artwork along with several others. The artist who used the initials, J.G., ostensibly lived in Berlin in the period after WWII. This may explain the use of initials rather than a full signature. We have to remember that under Soviet-controlled East Berlin after the war, this type of art was considered a radical departure from 'authorised' socialist realism. With this context, JG's works have sold internationally which speaks to the widespread assessment of the quality and interest of the art.
