'Cubist Still Life on Table', oil on board, with guitar, bunch of grapes and carafe, (circa 1940s - 1960s), by artist with the initials J.G. A masterly cubist still life representation from J.G. This particular work depicts items atop a wooden table painted in colours of earthy browns, grey, beige and white, from our collection of one of our most popular artists from the School of Berlin. Bold lines and angles weave in between the subtle hues creating a Georges Braque-like representation. Braque (1882 - 1963) often painted musical instruments - violins, guitars and mandolins - into his cubist works. Clearly this is an inspired homage to the master. Unfortunately details of J.G.'s life remain undiscovered other than they lived in Berlin in the period after WWII. We must remember that under Soviet-controlled East Berlin, this type of art was considered a radical departure from the 'authorised' socialist realism. Notwithstanding the anonymity of the works, several galleries have acquired and are now selling J.G.'s art which speaks to the widespread assessment of the quality and interest of the pieces. In good vintage condition - newly framed with linen slip. Initialed: 'J.G.' in the lower right hand corner. Upon request, a video of this work may be provided.
