SKU 1195
A diminutive ceramic wall mirror with blue enamel glaze and abstract motif (circa 1970s) attributed to François Lembo. A whimsically decorated wall mirror with gold coloured inner and outer borders framing a lustrous blue and magenta enamel in a repeating pattern. This piece is in good condition with vintage character and charm. There is a white ceramic backing and hanging ring on the rear of the piece. Although it is unsigned, it is without doubt by François Lembo. It is a cheerful and uplifting piece sure to provoke smiles and conversation. Upon request, a video clip may be provided. Although there has been much industry confusion between the works of Lembo and Mithé Espelt - her work has long been mistakenly attributed to François Lembo including by this gallery - this particular wall mirror is undoubtedly by Lembo and is differentiated by his particular style in the use of gold enamel and by the backing. Espelt's mirrors almost always have green felt backings.
About the Designer: A native of Vallauris, François Lembo (1930 - 2013) started his pottery career in 1951 in the workshops of Calva and Rossignol. After his apprenticeship he worked for 3 years in his father-in-law, Marc Roussel's, studio, before opening his own in the famed town of Vallauris, France in 1960. The work of Roussel, influenced by Byzantine art, inspired Lembo to create mirrors, often decorated in the style of Russian icons. He produced a number of religious icons decorated with small ceramic beads and sold his work at "Terre de Provence" with considerable success in the 60s and 70s. He worked as a ceramicist for some 23 years and passed away in 2013. His son Renaud continues as a ceramicist in Vallauris.
