'Bunting on a Bamboo Cane', oil on card, by David McClure, RSA RSW RGI, (circa 1980s-1990s). The buntings of Europe, Asia and Africa are related to American sparrows. They are rather finch-like but have differently-structured bills, slightly flatter heads, longer bodies, and many have longer tails with white sides. McClure's depiction in this work is a Lapland bunting which can be seen in Scotland but is now an endangered species with approximately 700 remaining in the UK during the winter months. This bird rests on a bamboo cane with meandering purple morning glory flowers. The crossing of the two canes gives form and balance to the composition as do the contrasting colours. Wonderful. The work is in very good vintage condition and is signed: 'D. McClure' in the lower righthand corner and on the rear of the work. The original, beautiful glazed frame has been retained with linen slip and is in fair condition with characterful blemishes in the form of nicks, scratches and scrapes. Please see accompanying photos. Upon request a video of the piece will be provided. The gallery holds another similar work by the same artist and would ideally be acquired as a pair.
