About the Artist: Thérèse Debains (1907 - 1975) started her career in 1926 when she was only 19 years old. Debains' paintings are characterised by a rare clarity and tonal delicacy and are generally still lifes, portraits or French landscapes. Among the first admirers of her work was famous collector, Léopole Zborowski, who also discovered and promoted the work of Amedeo Modigliani and several other great artists of the 'École de Paris' at the beginning of the 20th Century. Some of the most important French galleries exhibited her works at that time and now they appear in prestigious public institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art in Paris, the Chester Dale Collection in Washington D.C., USA, and the Art Museum in Algiers. A very influential private collector, Jonas Netter, at one time owned 80 paintings by Chaïm Soutine and nearly 40 by Modigliani, also exhibited Debains' works alongside those and others' from the École de Paris movement. More currently, Debains' works are actively sought in the international auction markets which have registered over 100 sales in the past twenty years.
