'Painter in the Jardin de Luxembourg, Paris' French School (1919)
SKU 0639
'Painter in the Jardin de Luxembourg, Paris', pastel on fine art paper, French School (1919). An intriguing depiction of a hatted-woman dressed in white at her easel in the park. A bucolic summer day, she sits under the foliage with dog at her side and wooden box of oils with which to feed her palette. She appears to be painting the statue nearby (most likely the Monument à Gabriel Vicaire, by Jean-Antoine Injalbert in the jardin. Vicaire was a French writer and poet who died in 1900). Given the subject of the painting, one wonders whether this is the artist's self-portrait or an artist painting another. The painting is 100 years old as of 2019. What a snippet of history! In fair vintage condition with some evident blemishes and slight fading commensurate with age. The overall image and structure however, are intact and the subject remains captivating. Signed (partially covered but visible in accompanying photos): "Prévot / '19" in lower righthand corner. Upon request a video of the piece will be provided.
About the Artist: Acquired in the South of France, extensive research regarding the signature of the painting was conducted, however the exact identify of the Prévot or Prévost who signed the work remains inconclusive. There were several XIX / XX century renown French painters with this name.
