'Market Day in Piazza Grande Locarno Switzerland' (1947-48)
SKU 1060
'Market Day in Piazza Grande, Locarno, Switzerland', oil on board, by unknown artist (1947-48). Locarno is an utterly charming Italian-speaking resort located on the northern shore of Lake Maggiore, nestled at the foot of the Alps. A hidden gem, Locarno is in the Ticino Canton, the Italian-speaking region of Switzerland, and is famous for its sunny climate. Locarno's architecture, cuisine, and culture are quite similar to neighbouring Italy's, but the Swiss-Italians have a distinct outlook from that of their comrades across the border.
This artwork depicts the busy farmer's market in the Piazza Grande which continues to this day, held on Thursdays. It is also the site of the famous Locarno Film Festival in which the largest screen in Europe projects art movies to the passionate film aficionados. The artwork is unsigned but is paired with another held by this gallery (Naples Street Scene 1947-48) and painted by the same artist. Regrettably, the signature is illegible. The quality and interest of the work however, is unquestionable. This painting is in good vintage condition commensurate with age and has been newly framed with a linen slip.
